Cancer Medicine and the Banana Fly

A Cancer Medicine and the Banana Fly

It is an open question whether the dog is the best friend of man -- or the banana fly. The latter is one of the tiny great helpers of medicine, mainly because its genome is very much similar to the human one. This year it will be 100 years since Dr. Thomas Hunt of the University of Columbia started to study the human heredity.

In the European Molecular Biology Laboratory EMBL in Heidelberg Germany the banana fly is one of the most important tools. Also in Heidelberg a Finnish scientist Ville Hietakangas may have found a new kind of medicine against cancer diseases - with the help of banana flies.
